About the Artwork
This wood chain is a traditional Liberian piece given to newlyweds. It is a symbol of unconditional love, applicable to both romantic and platonic partnerships. the piece features two figures on either end and is carved from a single piece of wood. The chain belonged to the artist Denisio's mother and was then gifted to the her. Denisio chose to employ a digital form of kintsugi, a Japanese repair technique where one fills the cracks and chips of an old object with gold. Rather than hiding the damage, kintsugi is meant to honor the history of an object by adding value to its flaws. Gold is also a major theme in Denisio's artwork as it is a precious metal central to Liberian culture and beauty. The crack in one of the links is a reminder that true love is loving the flaws, as poet Galway Kinnell once wrote "Let our scars fall in love".
